Walt Schmidt, age 94, passed away on May 4, 2021 peacefully with family by his side.
Walt was born in Pennsylvania in 1927. In 1928, his parents Josef and Anna moved to Detroit. Walt was raised in Detroit and at the age of 18 he joined the US Airforce just prior to the end of World War II and served in Germany with Air Communications Services until his honorable discharge in 1947.
Walt’s occupation was a sales executive in the logistics field working with motor carriers.
Walt and Yvonne were married in Detroit in 1956 and divorced in 1988. They had three children, the late Ronald (d. 1992), Kenneth, and Larry. The family was active members of the St. Genevieve Catholic Parish. Walt joined the Parish Usher club in 1969 and marked 50 years of service that included being the President of the Usher / Men’s club.
Walt did volunteer work for Focus Hope in Detroit and enjoyed being accompanied by his grandchildren over the many years of service. He was adamant about his catholic faith, the ten commandments, and yearly men’s retreat at St. Paul the Cross Retreat Center. His big love was his family, Charlevoix, swimming in Lake Michigan, and the outdoors.
Walt leaves behind his brother, Richard (Carol), children; Kenneth (Anne) and Larry, grandchildren; Eric, Matthew, DeAnna (Rami), Joseph (Lauren), Elizabeth, Martha, Michael, and Stella, and great-grandchildren, Addy, Nora, and Eva. In addition, Walt cherished his time with his companion of 28 years the late Sandy Briggs (d. 2019) and leaves behind Lori (Gene) Schoenherr, the late David (Margo) Briggs, and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind families in Deutschland of the Schmidt’s, Blaettel, Marx, and Monno.
Walt will be In-State for Final Visiting on Tuesday, May 11th from 10:30 until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am at St. Genevieve-St. Maurice Catholic Church, 29015 Jamison, Livonia 48154. Copy and paste the link for live streaming the mass.
