Nancy Elizabeth Hames (née Smythe), aged 86, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2024, in Tega Cay, SC. She was a graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School in Detroit, attended the University of Detroit, and was a homemaker, accomplished seamstress, and an avid volunteer worker. She is preceded in death by her parents, Stewart and Mary Anne Smythe; older sister, Mary Suzanne (Sue) McKay; and her beloved husband of 64 years, Richard Hames. Nancy is survived by her brother, Stewart Smythe; children, Stephanie (Steve) Alexy, Kim Hames, Suzanne (Mike) Becker, and Kevin (Sarah) Hames; and many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Nancy enjoyed entertaining and was known for her parties and her fine cooking. She was an enthusiastic sports fan, sharing her love of Lions, Tigers and Red Wings with daughter Suzanne, and was a season ticketholder of Michigan Wolverine football for decades with daughter Kim. She loved visits with her grandchildren, and she & Richard traveled often to see them. She also enjoyed international travel with Richard, particularly in retirement. She volunteered with many organizations, including St Maurice, Maplegrove Community Education, and Henry Ford Hospital where she was at one time head of the West Bloomfield volunteer program. She attended mass daily, and truly lived her faith.
Catholic mass will be celebrated at St. Genevieve-St. Maurice Catholic Parish, 29015 Jamison Street, Livonia, MI 48154, at 11am on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, to reminisce and honor the life of Nancy.
