Marc Allan Averill

January 21, 1947 — December 22, 2024

Redford Twp.

Marc Allan Averill, 77 of Redford, Michigan, died with his family around him on December 22, 2024 after a year long illness.

Born January 21, 1947 to Harry and Pearl Averill, he grew up In Redford where he graduated from Redford Union High school in 1964. Marc earned a degree from Michigan State University and worked for and eventually owned the family business, Averill Accounting. In 1986, he founded Wellspring with his wife and good friends from church. They loved being a part of their neighborhood in Detroit.

He and Jane moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 2008. Marc enjoyed retirement by spending time with grandchildren, working part time for Church World Service and doing life with his church, West End Fellowship, where he and Jane made dear friends in their second half of life. Nine years ago they returned to Redford, near the neighborhood where they grew up across the street from one another. They have lived there ever since enjoying their Michigan family, camping and traveling together.

Marc was a deep thinker and a dreamer. His faith in Jesus guided his life. He loved camping, baking bread, chopping firewood for his wood stove, reading Wendell Berry, the Bible, and his favorite theologians. He loved good music, especially songs by Iris Dement. His happy place was on Toddy Pond in Maine and at the cottage on Blake Lake, Michigan. He found purpose in connecting with all kinds of people over the years. There are so many lucky people who have called him a friend. He will be deeply missed.

Marc is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jane (Drolshagen) Averill; his children Lisa Mullen (Drew), Michael, and Amy Maurice (Blake); his grandchildren Abbey, Josh, Will, Norah and Tommy; and his sister Andree Stahl (Bill).

Marc was preceded in death by parents Harry and Pearl Averill and his brother Craig Averill.

All who knew him are invited to celebrate his life on Sunday January 19th at New Beginnings Fellowship, 14410 Puritan, Detroit. The family will be receiving your condolences from 1:30-2:30 immediately followed by a funeral service at 2:30. Additional church parking is available across the street at the school.
