John Daniel Lafayette aka Jack, Dad, Grampy and Great-Grandpa aged 92 of Livonia Michigan passed away peacefully on August 6th, 2021, while surrounded by family and friends.
John was born in Detroit Michigan on May 2nd, 1929, to Dr. John D. and Bessie Lafayette. He left high school to join the Navy during World War II. After which he attended Meulenberg College.
John was married to Karen N. Lafayette on June 17th, 1967; they were married for 54 years.
John held many titles throughout his life from sailor, model, caterer, business owner to Teamster. His favorite title was Dad. He enjoyed reading, singing, dancing, and listening. John was a passionate union man who was one of the founding fathers of the TDU (Teamsters for a Democratic Union). John was very active in his church as a member and a leader of the Meadowbrook Congregational Church. If you couldn’t find him sailing on the water, your best bet would be to find him tending to the flowers in his garden.
John was one of the first radarmen in the US Navy as well as the time he spent in the South Pacific helping with the development of the atomic bomb. He was present for the only detonation of the hydrogen bomb. After serving his country, John moved to Maine and started a family with Connie Davis. They had 3 children together John (Danny), Sheridan and Brett.
After Leaving Maine and moving back to the Detroit area, John met the love of his life and the 14 year his junior, Karen Shaffer. They have been together for 55 years. They had 3 more children Christopher, Kenneth, and Cherie. They moved to Livonia in 1972 where they lived for 49 years together.

John’s Grandchildren are John (Daniel) IV, MacKenzie, Ramsey, Annaliese, Kimble, Rylee, Davis, Logan, Bria, Britany, Steven, David, Jack, Stella, Lily, Jack, Jillian, Jenna.
His Great-Grand Children are Anella and Lyra and Chase.
John is preceded in death by his siblings Kenneth, Betty, Mary, John, Virginia, Margaret Robert.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 25th, 2021, at Meadowbrook Congregational Church 21355 Meadowbrook Rd., Novi MI 48375 at 11:30am. Streaming of the service is available at www.mbccc.org.
